The Municipal Antiquarium was established in 1997 with artifacts donated by private individuals, supplementing the surviving collection of the 1930s Antiquarium, and is arranged in four rooms within the Procojo of Borgo Sabotino, the ancient nineteenth-century proto-industrial structure for milk processing.
In the first room, cartographic and photographic material related to the founding of the Borgo is displayed. The settlement of the Agro Pontino is documented by prehistoric artifacts, architectural fragments, sculptures, and pottery found during the reclamation works, as well as original 17th-18th century maps that testify to the major transformations of the territory.
From artifacts dated between 500,000 and 6,000 years ago, the collection moves to the Pontinian Mousterian stone industry found along the valleys of Astura, Gorgolicino-Cicerchia, and on the paleo-shores of Lake Fogliano. Educational displays about the geological formation of the area accompany the visitor.
In the next two rooms, epigraphic, sculptural, pottery, and architectural materials are exhibited, including a sample of imported marbles and an interesting collection of ex-voto (in terracotta, lead, and bronze), brick stamps, and textile-related artifacts. There is also a cluster of artifacts connected to ancient routes and amphora storage (anchor stocks, types of amphorae, items found in wrecks, etc.). Various showcases display oil lamps, Etrusco-Roman, Magna Graecian, Campanian, and Roman vessels documenting the ancient visitation of the Pontine area. The numismatic section has been transferred from the “M.Valeriani” Museum.
