Recently inaugurated in a purpose-built venue, the National Archaeological Museum named ‘Etruscans of the Frontier’ houses artifacts from the Villanovan and Etruscan-Campanian center of Pontecagnano. This is an invaluable heritage, whose largest collection consists of finds from over 9000 graves excavated in the necropolises of Pontecagnano over the past fifty years. The visit follows an exhibition layout that unfolds chronologically, with sections dedicated to illustrating different periods, from the Eneolithic to the Roman Age, aiming to offer the visitor insights into the city and its urban development, the necropolises, the sanctuaries, and craft productions. Central to the exhibition pathway is the section dedicated to the aristocracies of the Orientalizing period (late 8th – late 7th century BC), to which some graves are attributable that, due to the composition and quality of the funerary goods, have been termed ‘princely’.
