The Museum, housed in the prestigious Palazzo Loffredo, presents to the public the results of important research conducted in north-central Basilicata and, at the same time, serves as the showcase of the complex archaeological reality of a region that has been a privileged meeting place between peoples of different origins and cultures. The Museum is arranged on two floors following a chronological and territorial criterion that offers visitors an archaeological overview of the entire region, from the period before Greek colonization up to the Roman conquest, with a special focus on the Potenza area. Particular attention is given to the findings from Vaglio, which include rich burial furnishings dating from the late 6th to the mid-5th century B.C. The refined armors from the warriors’ tombs and the precious jewelry from the female tombs testify to the presence of an elite identifiable as the kings (basileis) of the Peuketiantes, the peoples who inhabited the territory during the archaic period. The most significant evidence relating to the occupation of interior Basilicata in the 4th century B.C. by the Lucanians has been recovered from the sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio: embossed sheets, fragments of bronze statues, gold and silver jewelry, marble and terracotta figurines constitute the most precious ex-votos, displayed in the Museum with a particularly evocative exhibition.
