Il Museo, housed in the prestigious Palazzo Loffredo, presents to the public the results of important research conducted in central-northern Basilicata and, at the same time, serves as a showcase for the complex archaeological reality of a region that has been a privileged meeting place of peoples of different origins and cultures. The Museum is arranged on two floors according to a chronological and territorial criterion that offers the visitor the archaeological framework of the entire region, from the period before the Greek colonization to the Roman conquest, with a focus on the territory of Potenza. Special attention is given to the findings from Vaglio, from which rich funerary equipment date back to the end of the 6th and the middle of the 5th century BC. The refined armor from the warriors’ tombs and the precious jewelry from the female tombs testify to the presence of an elite in which the kings (basileis) of the Peuketiantes, the people who occupied the territory in the archaic age, can be recognized. The most significant evidence concerning the occupation of internal Basilicata during the 4th century BC by the Lucanians has been recovered from the sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio: embossed plates, fragments of bronze statues, gold and silver jewelry, marble and terracotta statuettes constitute the most precious ex-votos, displayed in the Museum with a particularly suggestive setup.
