Il Museo, housed in the prestigious Palazzo Loffredo, presents to the public the results of important research conducted in central-northern Basilicata and, at the same time, serves as a showcase of the complex archaeological reality of a region that was a privileged meeting place of peoples of different lineage and culture. The Museum is organized on two floors according to a chronological and territorial criterion that offers visitors an archaeological overview of the entire region, from the phase before Greek colonization to the Roman conquest, with a focus on the territory of Potenza. Particular attention is paid to the findings from Vaglio, from which rich funerary sets date between the end of the 6th and mid-5th centuries BC. The refined armor from the warrior tombs and the precious jewelry from the female tombs attest to the presence of an elite in which the kings (basileis) of the Peuketiantes, the peoples who occupied the territory in the archaic age, can be recognized. The most significant evidence concerning the occupation of inland Basilicata during the 4th century BC by the Lucanians was recovered from the sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio: embossed laminae, fragments of bronze statues, gold and silver jewelry, marble and terracotta statuettes constitute the most precious ex-votos, exhibited in the Museum with a particularly suggestive display.
