It is located on a granite slope overlooking Palau, in a splendid position facing the Maddalena archipelago and Corsica. It is one of the forts built in the 19th century to protect the northern coast of Sardinia, an area considered of great strategic importance. Built between 1887 and 1889 with granite from Monte Altura, it was then known as the most beautiful fortress in Europe. After World War II, it remained unused for a long period until 1990, when, with the transfer to the Superintendency, its cultural enhancement began. Surrounded by massive walls, it is a structure of considerable architectural and environmental interest: a significant example of masonry technique and 19th-century military architecture, its shape naturally integrates into the rock, also matching its color, constituting a successful example of harmony between architecture and the surrounding environment.
