E’ situated on a granite slope overlooking Palau, in a splendid position facing the Maddalena archipelago and Corsica. It is one of the forts built in the 19th century to protect the northern coast of Sardinia, an area considered of great strategic importance. Built between 1887 and 1889 with granite from Monte Altura, it was then known as the most beautiful fortress in Europe. After the Second World War, it remained unused for a long period, until 1990, when, with the transfer to the Superintendence, its enhancement in a cultural key began. Surrounded by massive walls, it is a structure of considerable architectural and environmental interest: a significant testimony to masonry technique and 19th-century military architecture, its shape naturally fits into the rock, also taking up its color, constituting a happy example of fusion between architecture and the surrounding environment.
