Founded in 1982 and located in the historic center of Mattinata, the Civic Museum was opened to the public only in 1990. Today the Museum hosts temporary exhibitions. In Mattinata, history is still alive: on Monte Saraceno a necropolis belonging to the Daunian people was found, near the sea there are remains of patrician villas, and in the historic center there are still traces of the first dwellings, such as the “pagliai,” low buildings with a rectangular base, made of rough local limestone stones, fitted one on top of the other.
