Founded in 1982 and located in the historic center of Mattinata, the Civic Museum was only opened to the public in 1990. Today the Museum hosts temporary exhibitions. In Mattinata history is still alive: on Monte Saraceno a necropolis belonging to the Daunian population was found; near the sea there are remains of patrician villas; and in the historic center there are still traces of the first dwellings, such as the “pagliai,” low constructions with a rectangular base, made of local limestone stones, rough, fitted one onto another.
