The Archive Library Civic Museum (A.B.M.C.) is located on the ground floor of the historic building housing the “Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi” High School in Altamura. The idea of creating an important cultural institution in the city was expressed by Count Celio Sabini in a letter dated September 6, 1946, addressed to Prof. Francesco Lospalluto, a Latin and Greek teacher at the local High School and honorary director of the Altamura Municipal Library. On October 19, 1949, the Archive Library Civic Museum was established, recognized as a moral entity by the Presidential Decree of December 6, 1963, and declared of local interest by the Apulia Region with the Regional Presidential Decree of June 12, 1985. The A.B.M.C. was enriched with volumes, documents, archaeological and museum artifacts, paintings donated by numerous private individuals as well as by the Municipality of Altamura, which became a perpetual partner and with which the institution signed an agreement in 1951. Since 1954, it has published the historical journal “Altamura,” which serves as a useful tool for understanding the territory. Today, the A.B.M.C. represents an important and fundamental cultural stronghold serving the city, where students and scholars find specialized and qualified material for research and study.
