In 1882 it was converted into a women’s hard prison and was completely decommissioned at the beginning of the 20th century. After years of neglect, during which the Fortress was turned into a warehouse and practically abandoned, in 1984, the Superintendency of Monuments began, under the direction of Dr. Maria Di Dio, a meticulous and challenging restoration that restored the Castle to its original splendor. Currently, under the supervision of the Superintendency, a proposal for the use of the entire complex is in an advanced study phase by the Municipality of Finale Ligure, the Pollupice Mountain Community, and the Historic Center of Finale, with the aim of making the Castle a cultural gathering point and a showcase for the entire surrounding territory.
