The road stretch between the ancient churches of San Martino di Albenga and S. Croce di Alassio is one of the most evocative and best-preserved sections of the ancient Iulia Augusta road, the route opened by Emperor Augustus between 13 and 12 BC to connect, along a coastal itinerary, the Po Valley with Gaul and Spain.
Along the ancient road stand the ruins of at least seven buildings from the Roman imperial period, dated between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. While the nature of two of them cannot be precisely determined, the remaining five are certainly interpretable as tombs. Of these, one is a columbarium, the others are funerary enclosures, actual family tombs.
