In 1882 it was converted into a women’s high-security prison and was completely decommissioned at the beginning of the 20th century. After years of neglect, during which the Fortress was turned into a depot and practically abandoned, in 1984, the Superintendence of Monuments began, under the direction of Dr. Maria Di Dio, a meticulous and difficult restoration that restored the Castle to its original splendor. Currently, under the supervision of the Superintendence, an advanced study proposal is underway for the use of the entire complex by the Municipality of Finale Ligure, the Pollupice Mountain Community, and the Historic Center of Finale, with the aim of making the Castle a cultural gathering point and a showcase for the entire surrounding territory.
