“The Borgo Terra Museum was inaugurated in 2004 in the Palazzo del Principe in Muro Leccese, once a fortified castle protecting the ancient village. The Museum displays objects, ceramics, and tools ranging from the Messapian age to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, thus tracing the history and social life of the settlement, reproduced in a model prominently placed in the exhibition hall. Many of the artifacts were found during the castle’s restoration in 1999. Since then, the University of Lecce has conducted numerous excavations that demonstrated the importance of the historic center of Muro Leccese in the Messapian and medieval periods. The Borgo Terra Museum is the first example of enhancing an ancient Salento village that narrates, through archaeological evidence, its historical and social transformations through the centuries.”
