“Il Museo di Borgo Terra was inaugurated in 2004 in the Palazzo del Principe in Muro Leccese, once a fortified castle defending the ancient village. The Museum exhibits objects, ceramics, and utensils ranging from the Messapian era to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, thus retracing the history and social life of the settlement, reproduced in a model that stands in the middle of the exhibition room. Many of the artifacts were found during the restoration of the Castle in 1999. Since then, the University of Lecce has conducted numerous excavations that have demonstrated the importance of the historic center of Muro Leccese in the Messapian and medieval ages. The Museo di Borgo Terra is the first example of enhancement of an ancient Salento village that tells, through archaeological evidence, its historical and social transformations over the centuries.”
