Founded in 2008 thanks to the research and promotion work of Prof. Vittorio Caminiti. The intent behind the establishment of the Museum is to collect and showcase this special citrus fruit, its history, its uses, and above all its essential oil, which for centuries has been exported worldwide.
The first section is dedicated to the bibliography of this citrus fruit. Moving forward, you will reach the Museum area where you can admire all the materials related to the chemistry of the essential oil, which is the only natural product capable of fixing the aromatic bouquet of perfumes, giving them a unique fragrance still unmatched by synthetic oils. In the central area of the Museum, machines are displayed that demonstrate the entire history and advancements in Bergamot processing: from the first hand-cranked machine invented by the local Barillà, to the electric ones. Another section is dedicated to the collection of all materials, including historical photos and various objects gathered from around the world, linked to the actual trade of the product. The fifth section of the Museum is dedicated to the significant use of Bergamot in food and wine. In this field, the entire fruit is utilized.
The last section of the Museum is dedicated to the display of finished products derived from Bergamot processing; thus, visitors can see not only bottles containing essential oil or personal care products, including the famous “Calabrisella” (cologne water), but also dolls, roses, and snuffboxes made from dried Bergamot rind.
