The Municipal Art Gallery ‘‘F. Netti’’ is located on the 2nd floor of the Castle of Conversano, the ancient residence of the Counts Acquaviva d’Aragona, in the hall dedicated to the donor of the prestigious private collection of the painter and writer from Santeramo in Colle. Built by the Normans around 1054 purely as a defensive fortress, the Castle of Conversano saw its construction continue until 1187. Later (17th century) it became the residence of the Acquaviva Counts and was transformed through successive renovations into a lavish noble lodging. The fort was built on ancient megalithic walls, dating back to the 6th-4th century BC, still visible at the base of the Keep Tower, the only surviving Norman tower. Overall, the structure has a trapezoidal layout with the four corners facing the cardinal points. Four towers rise at the four corners. In April 2011, the Municipality of Conversano purchased some private properties at the level of the 2nd floor of the Castle with a view to expanding the museum complex to include new museum sections dedicated to ‘traditions’ with exhibitions on city bands and ancient crafts, as well as to create an elevator shaft to eliminate architectural barriers up to the 2nd floor.
