L’Archivio Biblioteca Museo Civico (A.B.M.C.) is located on the ground floor of the historic building housing the “Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi” High School-Gymnasium in Altamura. The idea of creating an important cultural institution in the city was expressed by Count Celio Sabini in a letter dated September 6, 1946, addressed to Prof. Francesco Lospalluto, a Latin and Greek teacher at the local High School-Gymnasium and honorary director of the Altamura Municipal Library. On October 19, 1949, the Archivio Biblioteca Museo Civico was established, constituted as a moral entity by Presidential Decree on December 6, 1963, and recognized as of local interest by the Apulia Region with D.P.G.R. on June 12, 1985. The A.B.M.C. was enriched with volumes, documents, archaeological and museum artifacts, and paintings donated by numerous private individuals as well as the Municipality of Altamura, which became a perpetual member and with which the Entity signed an agreement in 1951. Since 1954, it has published the historical magazine “Altamura,” which serves as a useful tool for territorial knowledge. The A.B.M.C. now constitutes an important and fundamental cultural stronghold serving the city, where students and scholars find specialized and qualified material for research and in-depth studies.
