L’Archivio Biblioteca Museo Civico (A.B.M.C.) is located on the ground floor of the historic building that houses the Liceo-Ginnasio “Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi” in Altamura. The idea of creating an important cultural institution in the city was expressed by Count Celio Sabini in a letter dated September 6, 1946, addressed to Prof. Francesco Lospalluto, a Latin and Greek teacher at the local Liceo Ginnasio and honorary director of the Altamura Municipal Library. On October 19, 1949, the Archivio Biblioteca Museo Civico was established, recognized as a moral entity by the D.P.R. of December 6, 1963, and acknowledged as of local interest by the Puglia Region with D.P.G.R. of June 12, 1985. The A.B.M.C. was enriched with volumes, documents, archaeological and museum artifacts, paintings donated by numerous individuals but also by the Municipality of Altamura, which became a perpetual member and with which the entity signed an agreement in 1951. Since 1954, it has published the historical magazine “Altamura”, which serves as a useful tool for knowledge of the territory. The A.B.M.C. today represents an important and fundamental cultural stronghold serving the city, where students and researchers find specialized and qualified material for research and in-depth studies.
