The Hellenistic-Roman theater, built in the 2nd century BC, represents the most magnificent example, both in size and scenic location, among those documented in Campania. The building, damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD, underwent significant restorations and survived the terrible Vesuvius eruption of 79 AD. After the 4th century AD, having fallen into disuse, it was slowly stripped of its most precious elements until subsequent medieval floods erased all memory of it.
