The Vigna Cassia Catacombs are named after the vineyard that once stood above them. They are the largest burial hypogea discovered so far under the city of Arethusa, considering only a part of these catacombs has been cleared (that is, emptied of corpses) and opened to the public because some parts remain completely unexplored (archaeologists believe there are still “full” tombs and numerous artifacts yet to be uncovered). These Catacombs are divided into three sections: Catacombs of Santa Maria di Gesù, Catacombs of Marcia, and Catacombs of San Diego, all connected by a long internal tunnel.
