Le Catacombe di Vigna Cassia are called so because there was a vineyard above them. They are the largest discovered so far of all the burial hypogea located beneath the city of Syracuse; only a part of these catacombs has been cleared (i.e., emptied of corpses) and opened to the public, as some parts are still completely unexplored (archaeologists suppose that there are still “full” tombs and numerous artifacts to be uncovered). These Catacombs are divided into three sectors: Catacombs of Santa Maria di Gesù, Catacombs of Marcia, and Catacombs of San Diego, connected by a long internal tunnel.
