The Museum with its new setup presents the people of the Hypogea through the scientific reconstruction of the places and culture of these ancient populations. In the large Bronze Age sanctuary discovered in Trinitapoli (2nd millennium BC), dedicated to fertility cults, hypogeism manifests itself in various forms: from endless rows of pits to increasingly complex hypogea up to the unique “sacred way.” The hypogea were cyclically frequented, perhaps on the occasions of the great festivals of the agricultural year, for the performance of propitiatory ceremonies, probably related to hunting and the fertility of the harvest. Some generations later, the same hypogea were reused as a collective tomb to bury a large number of individuals. The deceased were accompanied by rich grave goods including prestigious bronze objects, amber necklaces, glass paste and faience, sculptures in bone and ivory, for the journey into the afterlife. Particularly notable is the discovery of two small ivory sculptures probably imported from the Eastern Mediterranean area. The archaeological finds recovered in the area of the large Bronze Age sanctuary of Trinitapoli are housed within the Civic Museum.
