You can apply by visiting any police headquarters (Questura) in Italy or an Italian Consulate abroad, where dedicated forms for both domestic and international travel are available.
At this stage, you may choose to have all the information printed directly in the child’s passport.
Alternatively, the same data can be issued on a separate certificate, printed by the relevant office of the institution you contacted.
In any case, the following details must be specified:
- name of one or two accompanying adults (up to a maximum of two);
- travel destination;
- duration of the trip.
The same procedure applies if a child under 14 is traveling alone under the care of an organization or a transportation company (such as an airline or ferry company). In this situation, the authorities clarify that only the official declaration will be issued.
Before you continue, here are some tips to keep in mind:
– The travel authorization for minors is valid for up to six months.
– It is only valid for a single trip (either one way or round trip) to the specified destination, from the child’s country of residence.
– If the minor is to be entrusted to a transport company, it is strongly recommended to check in advance that the company accepts this responsibility before booking and purchasing travel tickets.
– Always make sure to carry photocopies of the ID documents of the accompanying adult, the parents, and the minor, and of course, to have the originals with you at all times.
