Tipoteca Italiana is a private foundation established to enhance the art of typography. It is a privileged site for collecting printing typefaces, but not only that. A museum, restoration and printing workshops, classrooms, archive, library, and bookshop are the multiple facets of the same multifunctional space. The exhibition of machines and documents at Tipoteca supports the meaning, origin, and purpose of the work of type designers and Italian typographers, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day. It is a natural meeting place between two worlds: the “traditional” typography of the past, represented by lead or wood movable type and historical printing equipment, and the “digital” world of the present, as knowledge of the expressive power of traditional graphics and printing represents the cultural continuity of a craft of extraordinary vitality.
