Tipoteca Italiana is a private foundation established to promote typography. It is a privileged site for collecting printing types, but not only that. Museum, restoration and printing workshops, classrooms, archive, library, and bookshop are the multiple realities of the same multifunctional space. The exhibition of machines and documents of Tipoteca supports the meaning, origin, and purpose of the work of type designers and Italian typographers, from the industrial revolution to the present day. It is a natural meeting place between two worlds: that of the “traditional” typography of the past, represented by movable lead or wooden types and historical printing equipment, and that of the “digital” present, since the knowledge of the expressive power of graphics and traditional printing represents the cultural continuity of a trade of extraordinary vitality.
