Established in 1873 by the Provincial Council of Benevento, the Sannio Museum was set up by Almerico Meomartini in the 14th-century Rocca dei Rettori Pontifici. The rapid growth of the collection and research activities led the owning entity to purchase the monumental complex of the Abbey of S. Sofia in 1928, a Benedictine religious and cultural center dating back to the 8th century. The archaeological, medieval, and artistic heritage was moved to the former Abbey, which resulted in the division of works into three Departments: Archaeology and Medieval Studies, History, Art, and a bibliographic research center. For scientific research, in fact, the Sannio Museum has a specialized Library. The Institute’s heritage includes numismatic collections, historical archives, rare books, relics and handicraft objects, cartographic collections, printed documents, and photographs. These works are available for viewing in the Study Room according to internal regulations aligned with state laws.
