Istituted in 1873 by the Provincial Council of Benevento, the Museo del Sannio was housed by Almerico Meomartini in the 14th-century Rocca dei Rettori Pontifici. The rapid increase in heritage and study activities led the owning entity to purchase in 1928 the monumental complex of the Abbey of S. Sofia, a Benedictine religious and cultural center since the 8th century. The archaeological, medieval, and artistic heritage was transferred to the former Abbey, which led to the division of the works into three Departments: Archaeology and Medieval Studies, History, Art, and a bibliographic research center. For scientific research, in fact, the Museo del Sannio has a specialized Library. The Institute’s heritage includes numismatic collections, historical archives, rare books, relics and handicraft objects, cartographic funds and printed documents, photographs. The aforementioned works are made available for viewing in the Study Room pursuant to internal regulations, aligned with state legislation.
