Saint Antioco of Bisarcio is one of the largest Romanesque churches on the island. Its unique scenic location ranks the site among the most fascinating in the entire Sardinian architectural panorama. Built from blocks of volcanic stone from local quarries, it was the cathedral seat of the Diocese of Bisarcio until 1503.
The current building shows three construction phases: the first layout from the 11th century is evidenced by rows of roughly hewn cornerstones at the base of the east-side walls. The second building phase, after the mid-12th century, is characterized by well-shaped medium-sized cornerstones. The portico was added at the beginning of the 13th century.
The plan is three-naved with an apse to the east. The central nave has a wooden roof; the lateral ones are cross-vaulted. “
