Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio is one of the largest Romanesque churches on the island. The particular scenic location qualifies the site as one of the most fascinating in the entire Sardinian architectural panorama. Built with blocks of volcanic stone from local quarries, it was the cathedral seat of the diocese of Bisarcio until 1503.
In the current building, three construction phases can be distinguished: the first layout from the 11th century corresponds to the rows of roughly hewn cornerstones at the base of the walls on the eastern side. The second building phase, after the mid-12th century, is characterized by medium-sized, well-shaped cornerstones. The portico was added at the beginning of the 13th century.
The plan is three-naved with an apse to the east. The central nave has a wooden roof; the lateral ones are vaulted with cross vaults. “
