Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio is one of the largest Romanesque churches on the island. The particular scenic location qualifies the site among the most fascinating in the entire Sardinian architectural landscape. Built with blocks of volcanic stone from local quarries, it was the cathedral seat of the diocese of Bisarcio until 1503.
In the current building, three phases of construction can be distinguished: the first layout from the 11th century includes the rows of just roughly hewn quoins at the base of the walls on the sides towards the East. The second construction phase, after the middle of the 12th century, is characterized by medium-sized well-shaped quoins. The portico was added at the beginning of the 13th century.
The plan is three-naved with an apse to the East. The central nave has a wooden roof; the side aisles are vaulted with cross vaults. “
