The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, opened in 2008, is located inside Palazzo Belmonte Riso. The palace, completed in 1784, showcases the late Sicilian Baroque style. It features the Riso family coat of arms on the entrance portal. It was severely damaged by bombings during the last war and abandoned after being used as the headquarters of the Fascist Party of Palermo. The Sicily Region began restoration work in the mid-1990s and allocated the palace for the promotion of Sicilian contemporary art through the current museum.
