The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, opened in 2008, is located inside Palazzo Belmonte Riso. The palace, completed in 1784, bears witness to the late Sicilian baroque style. It features the Riso family crest on the entrance portal. It was severely damaged by the bombings of the last war and abandoned after being used as the headquarters of the Casa del Fascio of Palermo. The Sicily Region began restoration work around the mid-1990s and allocated its use to the promotion of contemporary Sicilian art through the current museum.
