The Porto Flavia mining site was named after the eldest daughter of the designer, Engineer Vecelli, and was built in 1924 by digging two superimposed tunnels in the limestone mountain, separated by 9 silos. The upper tunnel was used to load the silos, while the lower one was equipped with a conveyor belt that loaded the ore directly into the steamer’s hold using a movable arm.
