The Antiquarium Turritano, built in the early 1970s and opened to the public in 1984, is located in the archaeological area of Turris Libisonis, the Roman city on which the modern city of Porto Torres was built. This colony had the only port in the northwest of Sardinia that had direct connections with the ancient port of Ostia. The colony developed around the port and along the final stretch of the Riu Mannu, where the bridge, built in the early 1st century AD, is preserved; it is an exceptional engineering work. From the windows on the upper floor of the Antiquarium, visitors can enjoy the view of the archaeological site, which preserves important remains of the ancient urban quarters from the early and middle Imperial age (1st century BC – 4th century AD). The exhibited materials—mainly dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD—come from excavations in this area and attest to vibrant connections with all regions of the central, western Mediterranean basin and the Aegean. The exhibition is divided into two sections: the first concerns statuary and architectural sculpture from religious buildings, the second relates to everyday life materials found in the baths, in the tabernae and other private buildings, and in the necropolises. Numerous panels illustrate the locations and main details of the many excavations carried out in the city and surrounding areas, while a large plan places the excavation areas within the current urban layout. Inside the Antiquarium is included the heated room of a bath.
