The origins of Palazzo Fava date back to the medieval age, but the current structure takes shape during the Renaissance, with restoration works commissioned by the Fava family, who acquired it in 1546.

Work began around the early 1580s. During this period, Palazzo Fava was completely reinvented: the Gothic-style portico remained, but the brick facade was rebuilt, enriched with decorative elements. Also from those years is the intervention of the Carracci: in 1584, Filippo Fava commissioned Ludovico, Agostino, and Annibale to fresco some rooms on the main floor.

After the extinction of the Fava-Ghisilieri branch, Palazzo Fava passed first to the Medica Family, then to the Hotel Baglioni; in 2005, the entire complex was purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Bologna, fully restored and returned to the city as the Exhibition Palace. Its spaces host exhibitions of works belonging to the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Bologna and exhibitions of works from other important public and private collections.
