Dedicated to the ethnological and archaeological cultures of Africa, Oceania, and Pre-Columbian America, the Museum of Gazes is one of the most significant collections in Europe. Opened in 1972 as the Museum of Primitive Arts. Dinz Rialto Collection, in honor of its founder, it was housed in Castel Sismondo until 2000 and then set up in Villa Alvarado, formerly the Missionary Museum of Grazie, with the name Museum of Gazes. Ethnographic Collections of Rimini under the scientific direction of Marc Augé. The “gazes” are those of Westerners who, from the first encounter to today, have looked in various ways at “other” cultures. With a multicultural outlook, the museum encourages reflection on our relationship with the culture and art of peoples. Alongside the collections resulting from the travels of Delfino Dinz Rialto (1920-1979), a Venetian traveler-collector who journeyed through Africa, Oceania, and America, the museum also houses those of the Franciscan Friars, gathered in mission lands, the prestigious Ugo Canepa Pre-Columbian Archaeological Collection from Biella, and a small but significant Amazonian collection donated by Bruno Fusconi of Cesena. The materials of these important core collections are presented to visitors using different interpretative keys, reflecting various approaches to considering, collecting, “treating” from a museographic point of view, and artistically reworking the testimonies of other cultures. Inside the cave of Villa Alvarado, one of the many underground cavities dotting the hill of Covignano and, more generally, many other places in the Rimini area, a series of figurines connected to the water cult has been installed.
