Open to the public since 1984, it is located on the ground floor of the Renaissance Palazzo Numai and is focused on the ornithological collection consisting of over three thousand specimens of Italian birdlife. Started by Ferrante Foschi in 1934 (with a Eurasian Jay, a Bittern, and a Grey Heron donated by the naturalist from Forlì Pietro Zangheri), the collection progressively expanded until 1980, with the acquisition of many other Italian collections, in some cases dating back to the last century. Notable, for their historical importance and richness of specimens, are the Dal Nero collection from Verona, Dellagiacoma from Predazzo, Vici from Arcevia, Ragionieri and Rasoini from Florence, and Trischetta from Messina. With the richness of the collections and the multiple activities in scientific, promotional, and educational fields, the museum plays a significant role nationally. It also has a large library open to the public with thousands of volumes on naturalistic and scientific topics. It also hosts a Society of Naturalistic Studies that organizes and carries out territorial surveys and research in agreement with public bodies at regional and extra-regional levels.
