Founded by the Municipality of Cesena in 1990, initially as the Institute for the Conservation and Study of Naturalistic Materials of Romagna, it is housed within the Venetian loggia and the tower of Piazza della Rocca Malatestiana. It is organized into five exhibition spaces where various collections of materials of different kinds and origins are arranged. Of particular interest are the collections of the scientific laboratory of the Classical High School ‘V. Monti’ of Cesena, formed from the early decades of the nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century, including mineral and plant specimens, fauna, and educational instruments. In the outdoor section, situated within the evocative park of the rocca, numerous tree species, some quite rare, grow, alongside several examples of rocks from the Cesena hill and mountain area.
