The National Gallery of Cosenza, located in the prestigious Palazzo Arnone, headquarters of the Superintendent for Historical, Artistic, and Ethno-anthropological Heritage of Calabria, consists of a collection of paintings that, starting from the 1980s, have been acquired into the State’s patrimony. It documents significant moments of Italian art, particularly from the southern regions, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, and displays works by painters born in Calabria, from Pietro Negroni to Mattia Preti to Umberto Boccioni and, considering Calabria’s historical dependence on Naples, by Neapolitan artists who influenced the outcomes of local painting.
Recently, the Gallery, reopened to the public with an exhibition setup in line with European standards, received official institutional recognition with the Regional Decree establishing it on May 30, 2009.
