The Art Gallery was established in 1836 on the initiative of the Municipality of Ferrara. The chosen location was the main floor of the Palazzo dei Diamanti, where the large altarpieces from churches suppressed by Napoleon and paintings acquired from private local collections were displayed to the public.
In 1958, the Municipal Art Gallery transferred to the State and thus became the National Art Gallery. To the original core, other works were gradually added through deposits, donations (Vendeghini-Baldi collection), purchases by the State and by the Savings Bank of Ferrara, which deposited its own collection in the Gallery so that a broader public could enjoy the Ferrarese artistic heritage recovered from the antique market.
Since 2004, this commitment has been taken up by the Foundation of the Savings Bank (Fondazione Carife), which acquired the collection established by the Bank.
