The Pinacoteca was established in 1836 on the initiative of the Municipality of Ferrara. The chosen location was the noble floor of Palazzo dei Diamanti where the large altarpieces from churches suppressed by Napoleon and paintings acquired from private local collections were displayed to the public.
In 1958 the Municipal Pinacoteca was transferred to the State and thus became the National Pinacoteca. To the original core, other works were gradually added through deposits, donations (Vendeghini-Baldi collection), purchases by the State and the Cassa di Risparmio of Ferrara, which deposited its collection in the Pinacoteca so that a wider public could enjoy the Ferrara artistic heritage recovered on the antique market.
Since 2004 this commitment has been taken on by the Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio (Fondazione Carife) which took over the collection established by the Cassa.
