The Pinacoteca was established in 1836 on the initiative of the Municipality of Ferrara. The chosen headquarters was the noble floor of Palazzo dei Diamanti where the large altarpieces from churches suppressed by Napoleon and paintings purchased from private local collections were exhibited to the public.
In 1958, the Municipal Pinacoteca passed to the State and thus became the National Pinacoteca. Gradually, other works were added to the original core through deposits, donations (Vendeghini-Baldi collection), purchases by the State and the Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara, which deposited its collection in the Pinacoteca so that a wider public could enjoy the Ferrara artistic heritage recovered on the antique market.
Since 2004, this commitment has been taken on by the Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio (Fondazione Carife), which took over the collection constituted by the Cassa.
