Tickets are very affordable and the artists performing are among the best in the world. Several shows are held outdoors, set against fairy-tale backdrops.
The Savonlinna Opera Festival, for example, takes place in the courtyard of the magnificent Olavinlinna Castle (Lake Region); while the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Eastern Finland is held inside a charming historic church. In Seinajoki, a town in Ostrobothnia, during the Tango Festival, people dance freely in the streets, and the Helsinki Festival, which begins in mid-August, spreads its shows throughout the city.
But the highlight of the beautiful season is the Midsummer Festival, an ancient celebration held on the weekend closest to June 21st, when the sun barely sets in the south and not at all in the northern regions.
