The museum is located in the historic center of Spoleto, in Palazzo Rosari Spada.
The palace, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, belonged to the ancient Spoleto family that counts among its most illustrious members Virgilio Rosari, cardinal in 1557, fierce enemy of Saint Philip Neri.
In 1664 the palace became the property of the Spada marquises of Rome and in the early 19th century passed to the Marignoli family.
Of the majestic interior, the rich coffered ceilings framed in mural friezes remain, which decorate the large rooms on the first and second floors.
In the courtyard you can see the remains of a Roman terracing wall.
The museum is interesting for the rich collection of textiles housed in one of the most important historic palaces of Spoleto, former seat of the municipal art gallery.
Mainly composed of fabrics, clothes, embroidery and lace dating from the 14th to the 20th century, the collection was formed following donations from private individuals and targeted purchases. Theater costumes, books, scripts, and work notes of the costume designers Marcel Escoffier and Enrico Sabbatini are also part of it.
