The Documentation Center for the medieval section and the Museum are housed in the small fortress, while the Renaissance section, located in the marquisal palace, hosts the City Council chamber and the Mayor’s representative hall, emphasizing its ancient institutional function. The permanent project by artists Paolo Rosa, Leonardo Sangiorgi, Fabio Cirifino, and Stefano Roveda from Studio Azzurro features interactive multimedia capable of utilizing the multiple languages offered by new technologies. In this case, the group’s installations integrate into the Castle’s route, guiding visitors through the exhibitions and the site itself. The exhibition activity, inaugurated in September 2007 in rooms allocated for temporary exhibitions, has focused on contemporary art, such as Binomi, the first group show that featured artists and different genres paired together like Bertozzi & Casoni, Francesco Bocchini and Andrea Chiesi, Marcello Grassi and Elisa Rossi. The program concluded with another exhibition dedicated to contemporary art: Angela Vettese, director of the Civic Gallery of Modena, curated the display The Spirit of Art from Carlo Cattelani’s private collection, which includes artists such as Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Gino De Dominicis, Agnes Denes, Dan Graham, Carsten Höller, Karen Kilimnik, Alison Knowles, Sherrie Levine, Nam Jun Paik, Alberto Burri and Mario Schifano, Gilbert & George, Sol LeWitt, Hermann Nitsch, Yoko Ono, Daniel Spoerri, Atsuko Tanatka, Franco Vaccari, Ben Vautier, Wolf Vostell, and Sue Williams. In 2008, the castle hosted an artistic intervention by David Tremlett with five wall drawings and an exhibition of preparatory sketches for works the English artist made in other historic public locations. In 2010, the exhibition “Rhapsody in Green” depicted the artistic journey of illustrator Laura Zuccheri. It is also noteworthy that the complex’s activities include hosting various multimedia proposals such as workshops for children, conferences, and concerts including Woma Jazz, the only jazz festival composed entirely of female artists.
