The collections of the Institute, located since 1896 in the former Olivetan monastery of San Michele in Bosco built in 1364, but whose origins date back to the 12th century, include the Scientific Libraries to which the Putti Donation belongs. Coming from the famous orthopedic surgeon Vittorio Putti (1880 – 1940) and housed in the former apartment of the convent prior, it combines manuscripts, incunabula, more than two hundred 16th-century books, and over a thousand ancient medical books. Also notable are the collection of surgical instruments from ancient to pre-industrial times, a series of over 700 portraits and autographs of famous doctors, an armillary sphere from 1528, a Greuter globe from 1636, and two splendid anatomical statuettes from the 16th century. The Institute’s important paper heritage, consisting of over twenty thousand volumes including monographs and journals of orthopedic interest, is preserved in the rooms of the old Olivetan library, designed for Prior Taddeo Pepoli by Giangiacomo and frescoed by Domenico Maria Canuti, a pupil of Guido Reni, and the Swiss Haffner between 1677-1680.
