Founded in 1998, the Contemporary Art Museum of Polignano a Mare opened with a major retrospective exhibition of Pino Pascali, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and Pietro Marino, on the thirtieth anniversary of his death in 1968. (Pino Pascali was born in Polignano in 1935 and is buried here). The Artistic Direction of the Museum was entrusted to Professor Rosalba Branà. With the establishment of the Museum, the prestigious Pino Pascali Prize for contemporary art was revived, which had been discontinued in 1978 with the award to J. Kounellis; the new statute provides that this Prize, consisting of the realization of a retrospective exhibition and publication of the catalog, be awarded alternately to a renowned art critic and an emerging artist. It began with the Pino Pascali Prize for art criticism awarded to Achille Bonito Oliva, who organized a showcase of artist videos (Alighiero Boetti, Bill Viola, and others) and a conference.
