Founded in 1998, the Contemporary Art Museum of Polignano a Mare was inaugurated with a large retrospective exhibition of Pino Pascali, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and Pietro Marino, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of his death in 1968. (Pino Pascali was born in Polignano in 1935 and is buried here). The artistic direction of the Museum has been entrusted to Professor Rosalba Branà. With the establishment of the Museum, the prestigious Pino Pascali Prize for contemporary art was revived, interrupted in 1978 with the award to J. Kounellis; the new statute establishes that this Prize, consisting of the realization of a retrospective exhibition and the publication of the catalog, will be awarded alternately to a well-known art critic and an emerging artist. The Prize begins with the Pino Pascali Prize for art criticism awarded to Achille Bonito Oliva, who organizes a review of artist videos (Alighiero Boetti, Bill Viola, and others) and a conference.
