The MNAF National Alinari Museum of Photography originates from the archives of the Fratelli Alinari, founded in 1852, and from the collections of the Fratelli Alinari Museum of the History of Photography, established in 1985 and, until 1997, housed in Palazzo Rucellai on Via della Vigna Nuova.

The collections cover not only the history of the Alinari photographers but the entire history of Italian and worldwide photography from the 19th century to today, fulfilling an important role of research, preservation, and dissemination of photography.

The MNAF exhibits rare original photographs and precious photographic equipment. It is structured into two exhibition areas: one for temporary themed exhibitions and one for permanent collections.

The latter allows visitors to take a journey through the history of photography starting from 1839, the year the first daguerreotypes were made, up to contemporary digital images. A special tactile path also enables visually impaired visitors to enjoy the museum visit.
